Half-company: 2 files, 4 half-files, or 12 men (melbrin x 1, arkalin x 1, kalin x 2, armolak and molak x 8)
File: 2 half-files or 6 men (melbrin or arkalin x 1, kalin x 1, armolak and molak x 4)
Half-file: 3 men (melbrin or arkalin or kalin x 1, armolak and molak x 2)

In peacetime, units tend to be understrength – a peacetime company rarely numbers more than twenty men and often numbers less.

As an example, the garrison of Caer Jedes numbers twenty-three men. The entire garrison is under the command of a Hethrin (a knight and the brother of the Lord Constable). The medium foot contingent, a half-company, is led by a Hulhurin (a knight and the son of the Hethrin) and is divided into two files of five men each. One file is led by the garrison Armolarin and the other is led by an Arkalin. The light horse contingent, another half-company, is led by a second Hulhurin (a knight and a cousin-by-marriage of the Lord Constable and Hethrin) and is also divided into two files of five men each. One file is led by a Melbrin and the other is led by an Arkalin. All of the common soldiers in both contigents are Molaks; while intermediary ranks such as Armolak and Kalin exist, they are not in uniform use.
